"Live from Cape Canaveral": Covering the Space Race, from Sputnik to Today Paperback – August 19, 2008
Purchase options and add-ons
“From Sputnik to the International Space Station, Jay Barbree has seen it all, and reported it well. ‘Live from Cape Canaveral’ encapsulates the most technically exciting half century in history.” –Neil Armstrong
Some fifty years ago, while a cub reporter, Jay Barbree caught space fever the night that Sputnik passed over Georgia. He moved to the then-sleepy village of Cocoa Beach, Florida, right outside Cape Canaveral, and began reporting on rockets that fizzled as often as they soared. In "Live from Cape Canaveral," Barbree—the only reporter who has covered every mission flown by astronauts—offers his unique perspective on the space program. He shares affectionate portraits of astronauts as well as some of his fellow journalists and tells some very funny behind-the-scenes stories—many involving astronaut pranks. Barbree also shows how much the space program and its press coverage have changed over time. Warm and perceptive, he reminds us just how thrilling the great moments of the space race were and why America fell in love with its heroic, sometimes larger-than-life astronauts.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2024Easy read with so much insight into the Space Race. Purchased a second copy for my mother who lives on the space coast.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2013This book is a quick, easy read that covers the entire history of the United States manned spaceflight program. I have read many biographies of people inside NASA and this book does not go into the detail that any of those books do. But it has the advantage of covering everything from the Mercury 7 to the Columbia disaster. I also found the perspective of an outsider interesting compared to that of the insiders from within NASA. At times Barbee is a little toward fawning about astronauts and I would have liked to have even more history about the press perspective. But overall, I would recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2007A well-written romp through the space age by a true professional. It is riveting and hard to put down. A must read for those interested in a historically accurate portrait of the U.S. space program.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2019I grew up listening to the NASA space launches, from seeing the first Mercury astronauts on TV to seeing men on the moon, the Hubble telescope launch- and repairs. I saw Challenger blow up live on CNN, and the ISS built, and the first crew moving into their new space home. I thought I knew all that had happened. Wow! Was I wrong!! I didn't know the half of it!! Read this book, and find out about the other half of NASA and the Space Race from the man who covered it for half a century, the man who knew the participants and what really happened!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2020I followed the space program from Al Shepard to Space X, this guy knows his stuff. He brings insight about the space program that could only be known from people on the “inside”. I hope if you select this book you will feel the same.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2007I was interviewed by Mr. Barbree in 1966 when I was a young engineer with McDonnell working on the Gemini project. McDonnell had sent me to the Cape to support the Gemini 9A ATDA target launch and I was working the night shift atop the Pad 14 gantry when Mr. Barbree appeared, began asking me questions and taking notes. I doubt that I was able to tell him anything worthwhile, as I was much too nervous about being interviewed by a national correspondent.
So it was with great expectation that I ordered his book. Alas, I was most disappointed when I finished it. Given his long career covering the space program, I expected there to be no (or very few) technical or factual errors, yet the book is full of them. There is interesting material included, but I began to become very distracted by the many inaccuracies. They definitely hampered my enjoyment.
People not familiar with the history of the space program will probably not notice most of them, but that is not the point; he should have done better.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2007This book is a fantastic read. A real account of the goings on behind the scenes at the Cape. Hilarious at times, serious and insightful at others. Great read for high school students interested in space or anyone who has lived through the beginnings of the space program. Perfect gift for those wanting a completely different view on the astronauts of the time.
