Allen Carr was a chain-smoker for over 30 years. In 1983, after countless failed attempts to quit, he went from 60–100 cigarettes a day to zero without suffering withdrawal pangs, without using willpower, and without putting on weight. He realized that he had discovered what the world had been waiting for, the easy way to stop smoking, and embarked on a mission to help cure the world’s smokers.

As a result of the phenomenal success of his method, he gained an international reputation as the world’s leading expert on stopping smoking and his network of clinics now spans the globe. His first book, Allen Carr’s Easy Way to Stop Smoking, has sold over 12 million copies, remains a global bestseller, and has been published in more than 40 different languages.

Allen Carr’s Easyway method has been successfully applied to a host of issues including sugar addiction, alcohol, debt, and other addictions.

Before I begin, I just want to say that this is the first review I have done for Amazon despite being a Prime member for 6+ years. I know I know, you may be thinking I am some lazy bum who does not care about his fellow Amazon shopper....OR realize that this book has made such a large impact on my life and want to share it with as many people as possible. My goal is to give a little background about myself, my struggle and the solution. Even if just one person gets something from this then this review will be a success. Now a little about myself...
I am 26, I have a successful job in the construction industry, have a great group of friends and family and my whole world revolves around cars. Talking, wrenching, watching, driving. It is in my blood. This seems irrelavent now but will make more sense later. I went to a great high school, played all the sports, never did drugs or drank in excess. Yes, I went to parties but it was not a every weekend event. Continued on to college and got a two year degree. I was paying for myself so I could not afford the required classes to get my Bachelors degree and in search of a job I ended up getting into construction.
By the time I was 20 I was probably drinking twice a week steady with some of the older guys I worked with. I turned 21 and without realizing it my drinking had shot through the roof. I was going out and buying this or that to try whether it be hard alcohol or microbrews. I did not think much of it since I was just doing what every other 21 year old was doing, right? Around the age of 23 I realized I had a major problem on my hands. I was buying a pint of Jagermeister a night and could slam the entire bottle in one shot. Of course I left out some details in those two years such as I gained about 60 pounds, ruined the relationship with the girl of my dreams whom I dated for 5 years, I lost touch with friends I had known for years, was now socially and personally using drugs (weed, pills, coke) becuase I was trying to reach a "new drunk" since I had such a high tolerance and I lost touch of reality.
But I always made it to work in time, I made new friends, bought bigger clothes and was just telling myself one continuous excuse after another. So I continued to drink like a fish. Anything and everything. I can not tell you how many times I would slam that pint of Jager, and within an hour was driving to the local liquor store for another pint because I started to early (5:00pm) and didnt want to lose my buzz before bedtime. Being blackout drunk was almost a nightly occourance and the hangovers just became the normal for me. But again, I kept it to myself and figured I would deal with the issue later.
I eventually went to an AA meeting and what the people said there really made sense. They had the same issues as I did. But I did not know how to dedicate an hour a day to it, but more importantly, let everyone know that I was an alcoholic. I did not want that label. I tried stopping through willpower a dozen or so times. That would last about two weeks tops before I gave myself another reason to drink. I would google things and tried the Kudzu root and the vitamin deficiency programs, etc. Nothing worked. I knew I had to stop before I killed myself or someone else. I could not live my life like this. I stumbled across "The Easy Way to Control Alcohol" on Amazon, read some reviews and based off them, it almost seemed to good to be true. I ordered it and was nothing but doubtful.
Once I recieved the book I did not open it up for about three weeks. Why, I am not sure, probably becasue I would have rather drink then read. Once I started, you are given very specific instructions, one of which is continue to drink like normal as long as you read the book sober. I would read a dozen or so pages at a time about every three days and I really took my time, did what he said and comprehended what he wrote. The entire time I was nothing but doubtful that this would work however in the back of my head I was jumping for joy hoping it really would be as easy as Carr said. When I got to the last chapter it probably took me a week to finish it. I was just so apprehensive and nervouse for the "final instructions."
I did it, I completed the book but nothing felt different. Did it work? I went to work the next day and on the way home I avoided all the liquor stores. But it felt more like when I try to quit with the willpower method then a permanent fix. I stayed sober that night. The next day I went to work and did the same thing, avoided the liquor store stop on the way home but only because I felt like I had to. I was walking up to my front step of my house when my best friend whom I have grown up with was working on his car and he yelled over. He asked if I wanted to give him a hand putting a part on his car when he gets off work (9pm). Then it all clicked!
Right then, right there, it all made sense. That was my "Eureka!" moment. I was free. No longer a slave to alcohol and my life revolving around it. At that moment I realized I no longer had to make up another excuse or text him the next day saying how I "fell asleep" when in reality would rather get in a drunken coma then hang out with my best friend and work on cars. So many times I had left car shows/events early or blew off working on a car because I wanted to get drunk. At that moment I knew I would never have to make that decision again and it felt incredible.
Everything Carr said fell into place and not only was I going to be sober, I was going to stay sober and it was going to be easy. I am proud to say I am currently six weeks sober, I have not felt this good since I was about 20 and I have zero desire to drink. This includes going to the bar for lunch with my co-workers, bowling in a league once a week, celebrating New Years Eve, my birthday and attending a wedding. It is a feeling I cannot describe to say I have beaten alcohol.
I know my review has been a little longer then you probably wanted to read, and I could still write more but I just wanted to show that I was your typical jock in high school, I was succeessful at whatever I tried and alcohol still dragged me down to its level. Even then I was still a functioning alcoholic but that did not make it ok. I also wanted to establish just how much alcohol I was drinking on a daily basis and was able to stop just like that. This book is your answer if you have a real desire to quit drinking. You need to follow Carr's instructions exactly as he says, take your time reading it, have an open mind and digest what he says. Just becuase you finish it does not mean your magically cured. You may have to re-read it or let it sink in for a few days. It has changed my life and I am forever thankful for it. I cannot wait to update this review and let everyone know how my sobriety is going and the positive changes it has led to. Thank you for reading and if you have any questions do not hesitate to ask.

    UPDATE:
Well I’m sorry for such a long delay in writing an update but I just wanted everyone to know that I just passed my 5 year date for being sober. Yes, that is correct, 5 years without a single drop. My life has done a full 180. I went to school to become an electrician, I have purchased my own house and completely renovated it, I have an amazing fiancé who I live with, my finances are in order, I am back in the gym lifting and have lost all the weight. This one book has changed my life.
I think one of the best things about this method vs the willpower method is I don’t constant want a drink. I have literally lost the desire to drink. Now do not get me wrong, there are times where I have had a bad day and could use a drink but I think that is more of what society has told us to do vs what my body actually wants.
And the hardest part I think of this whole process is the social aspect of drinking. I still will go to bars about once a month with coworkers or friends and have a coke and I can be in that atmosphere and be ok. But I will always drive separate so that I can leave whenever I want.
So to wrap things up if you feel that your drinking has gotten a little out of control this book is worth a read. I can’t believe I have been clean for 5 years but here I am writing this update. It is an amazing feeling. Everything is so much simpler now and I am happier then I can put into words. So don’t give up. Keep trying. It is worth the fight. Life will go on without alcohol.

I don’t think this would work necessarily if someone just bought it for a gift for someone else. You can definitely come into it not necessarily wanting to give up alcohol and hoping that you can control it, and in fact you may be able to, but by the time you finish the book you probably won’t want to drink at all. I was familiar with Easyway and the method when I read the book in 2006 for quitting smoking. I had just turned 40 and had vowed to myself that if I didn’t quit, I was probably going to be a lifelong smoker and that terrified me. I already had 26 years under my belt.

I quickly got bored with the redundancy back then but by the end of the book I realized it was rewiring my brain. I knew it would be the same way with alcohol. When I decided to stop I’d had a series of stops and starts each one getting shorter and easier than the last but I was so freaking sick of alcohol I turned back to Carr’s message. He was right of course I couldn’t afford the amount of money I was spending on the trendy alcoholic seltzer waters and craft beers and I was gaining weight. So I started this time mid November with the goal to stop at the new year which is a cliché but on top of that I set a late February appt with my Dr. who I knew would be taking labs. Long story short I didn’t need a whole lot of redundancy this time around but he hit on some excellent points and I ended up not finishing the book before New Year’s but not wanting any alcohol either.

I will tell you and I hate to say it some of the things in the book need to be fact checked. Stopping alcohol cold turkey as others have said can be dangerous. If you can do it without medical aid you need to have in place good food vitamins and minerals to replenish those you have lost and a couple of days to rest and maybe sequester yourself because you might be really irritable. In fact it’s easy to snap at people if you’ve been drinking every day, and if you can walk or do any type of exercise, that helps. I have worked in the field for years, yes while drinking just like Dr’s smoke but tell you not to. We are all human and frankly Carr would call it a crutch but holidays are incredibly difficult here with my husband and me and if I’m going to fall it’s then. The thing is alcohol doesn’t help one bit, just makes it worse now I’m dragging around the extra work going out to get alcohol since I can’t buy too much when I do that because I would drink it all. He doesn’t emphasize the first 24 to 48 hours are the worst and then it typically takes another week. It could be months before the sleep cycle resets itself and you may sweat your way through several nights at first. I guess what I’m saying is I don’t get anything out of drinking so it always comes back to life on life‘s terms. But while are you reading the book why not prepare yourself physically and emotionally, and like I said have good things in the house? Have a back up drink- I like hot tea and nonalcoholic sparkling waters. Which reminds me drink plenty and plenty of water. You may want to consider milk thistle to help your liver which has been working overtime even though you may not have realized it. I want everyone to enjoy life and not feel like they’re dragging around a little monster they have to feed. Watch for triggers because those will be an every TV show, movie and your social life as well as your relationships and work. Those aren’t going away you just have to look at them a different way. It is so much better on the other side which is why I was so angry with myself yes I said angry because I knew I had to pull back out of it and get better. I’m going to go ahead and say it I’ve had plenty of experience in AA- but that was always in support of others. If it works for you by all means do it but the last thing in the world I wanted after quitting smoking or drinking was to sit around and talk about it I just had a tremendous urge to get on with life. Frankly with alcohol there’s usually some cleaning up to do because things get undone and it stops impulse control so a couple of relationships needed fixing. You may not be into spirituality but for me it was a keystone. Spend more time with your pets that is most definitely spiritual and even if you’ve been helping other people all along really start noticing what they’re saying because alcohol will blur all that. Anyway I wish you the best and if you don’t buy this book, find your own path. Even though he may take liberties with some facts he is absolutely right you are gaining nothing by wasting your time money and health on the big lie we have been sold. I’m not a victim of the system but I was definitely recruited and stayed despite the misery. And no I am not in recovery I am simply choosing not to drink because I don’t want to re-introduce it to my body, just like fast food or junk food so that my body starts to crave it. It’s that simple. It’s harder if you have a roommate or a spouse that drinks especially a spouse. I am lucky because mine wanted to quit and he stopped at New Year’s too. He had actually gained a lot of weight and was sick of it. OK so this was long winded but whoever took the time to read my post I truly hope there is some grain of hope and promise!

This author goes to great lengths to let you know that alcohol is poisen. I get that and it says that so many times it gets drilled in pretty good. Common sense prevails in this book over and over. There are several ways the author drills in this and other things you already know but well written. I actually quit right after reading the last chapter as directed. He was very clear to have your last drink after the final instructions. So far ive been 8 days sober and I have no regrets buying this book. He makes quite a bit of simple observations about being able to enjoy life without alcohol. If you are already making plans to quit alcohol this book is a good choice. The title is misleading if you are a heavy abuser of alcohol becuase if you are, then quit alltogether. If your buying this book to just control your alcohol consumption then you need to find another book or AA. He does not believe AA is for everyone and I agree. I definetly have the strength to not do the AA route now like some people very close to me. Im not a public meeting telling strangers my personal issues. If you are go for it. For me Id keep this book around and keep it as a reference material. No regrets here. Just remember to weigh two things and you will do just fine. 1. What are the benefits of alcohol. 2. what are the benefits of not drinking alcohol. Its up to you to make that decesion. If you really making lots of bad decesions when drinking then you will understand what in life is more important. Your decision is yours and yours only.Honestly ,I was a heavy drinker. I made up my mind a month before I quit. I have ZERO regrets and ZERO reasons to drink again after 30 years of abuse. Ill check in again in a month or two to update. Thanks and I hope your journey is a happy and productive one. My mind hasnt been this clear in many years!!! God Bless ..

I am not even done this book yet and it's already working SO WELL for me. Holy smokes. This book uncovers everything. It's everything you need to read. His writing style is a little hard to get used to (I think he sounds very arrogant) but if you read every word, I really think this book can help you. I hope it does if you are looking for help :). 5.0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life in a day!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 28, 2020
I had always had alcohol as a big part of my life from teenage years onwards. I thought that it gave life that extra coating of fun and sparkle, that it made events more enjoyable and that it took things from being nice to being great.
Over time, from teenage years through my 20s and 30s and into my 40s, it became something that I couldn’t imagine evenings out without having drinks (a few beforehand to get the evening going and then a steady flow throughout the night to never let the fun-meter drop down), evenings in seemed duller without wine or gin and tonics. It was a consistent backdrop to pretty much everything I did.
I knew that it had negative effects - waking up with a feeling of foreboding while I remembered what had happened the night before (did I make a fool of myself or go too far or did I do okay?), lots of hangovers (from mild to plenty of humdingers), arguments over ridiculous things, letting people down - but I just couldn’t imagine life without the “upsides” of drinking. Where would the fun come from? How dull would it be without it?
I started to try different types of moderation - slowing my pace down, keeping drinking to a set number of days per week (I did 2 days a week for about 6 months) but I always felt like I was holding my breath until I could have my “fun days”.
I was looking for yet another moderation book when I came across this one by Allen Carr - I ordered it on that basis and started to read it.
I read it pretty much in one sitting and, by halfway through, I knew I’d never drink again.
The stripping back of the myths about alcohol that are woven into our society was what did it for me. It was like turning the bright shiny apple around and seeing a great fat maggot sitting in the middle eating away - I lost my desire for it immediately and knew that the image I had of alcohol in my head had been torn down forever.
That was 4.5 years ago and I haven’t touched a drop of alcohol since I picked this book up. What’s even better, is that I haven’t wanted to.
No more white-knuckling the periods of abstinence, no more feelings of guilt, no more trying to remember what happened the night before, no more trying to pretend that I meant to do the stupid things I’d done while drinking.
I wake up every day hangover-free, shame-free, guilt-free. I used to have those mornings when I hadn’t drunk for a couple of days and I’d see that great feeling as setting me up nicely for a ‘few’ glasses of wine with friends - now I see it as setting me up nicely for a wonderful day without the negative effects of alcohol that will lead to another day feeling exactly the same way.
I’m productive, relaxed, kind, considerate, happy, calm, reliable, thoughtful, clear-headed, energised...and FUN! All the things I could never be when I was drinking or hungover. I have hobbies, interests, time for my daughters and husband and family. My life is so much fuller and richer than I could ever have imagined, than it could ever have been with alcohol edging so many things out.

So, the writing style is old-fashioned, some of the analogies are out of date, but the messages are so relevant that it would be a shame not to give it a try. Jason Vale essentially wrote the same book but in a more modern way (Kick the Drink Easily) - he’s trained in the Allen Carr method. I got both books - why not? I also LOVED The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober by Catherine Gray - I listened to it on Audible (read by her) and it’s amazing.

If you’re a light drinker wanting to make a change, get this book - if you’re a heavy drinker (me!) wanting to make a change, get this book. Basically, if you’re reading this review, there’s a reason you’re in this section - just get the book and read it. Who knows, it could transform your life like it did mine.
    Thank you Allen!
